Solar Net Metering

Net metering is a service which credits our residential and commercial customers who are equipped with a renewable generation system (RGS). This RGS may add additional electricity to the grid. Customers are billed for the energy (in kilowatt hours, kWh) delivered from the utility to their home or business. The utility will provide Renewable Generation Credit (RGC) for the energy received from the customer in excess of their usage.

Solar energy is converted from direct current (DC) power to alternating current (AC) power through the inverter connected to the RGS. Excess electricity is allowed to flow through the power line to the OEU electrical grid.

The transmission and distribution grid will continue to be used by our Net Metering customers. They will need to rely on our system of poles, wires, substations, maintenance crews, and operations equipment to ensure power is supplied to their homes at night, when it's cloudy, or when conditions require additional power for the home or business not provided by their renewable generation system. Therefore, the Renewable Generation Credit will not be a 1 for 1 monetary credit for the wholesale power received from the grid. Net metering can help reduce a customer's peak electricity loads, reduce the strain on distributions systems, and reduce transmission and distribution losses.

OEU Community Solar

This is for OEU's Community Solar Program, not to activate new service

Going solar is a big decision and it is important to be informed of your solar options. Understanding the maintenance required with solar helps you make the right decision for your family and/or business. Ocala Electric Utility (OEU) is expanding solar capacity within the community and we encourage our customers to do the same. We are your hometown, reliable, public power provider and we are here to assist you with all your solar needs.

Are you interested in clean, renewable energy at an affordable price? Ocala Electric Utility is part of the Florida Municipal Solar Project, a large-scale community solar energy project that enables us to provide renewable energy to our customers.

The Florida Municipal Solar Project is designed to generate 375 megawatts of solar energy. It is one of the largest municipal-backed solar projects in the United States with approximately 1.5 million solar panels installed on five solar farms located in Osceola and Orange counties. The project will be completed in two phases. Phase 1 was completed on June 30, 2020 and consist of 3 solar sites. OEU is receiving  7 MW of solar power from Phase I. Phase II will consist of 2 solar farms to be completed 2025. OEU will receive 20 MW of power from Phase II.

What does this mean?

  • Accessible solar to all customers
  • No upfront large cost outlay
  • No long term contracts
  • Maintenance free
  • No equipment installed on roof
  • Transferable to another residence or business within OEU's Service Territory

Existing OEU customers, if you are interested in participating in our OEU Community Solar Program please contact Tony Clayton at dclayton@ocalafl.gov in order to reserve your spot and receive locally generated Florida solar energy.
